RF Distribution: RF Matrix Systems
Raven Research was founded on the design and manufacture of HF matrix systems for defence communication and surveillance. At the very least, implimentation of a shortwave surveillance system requires in-depth study of the nature of shortwave radio propagation, antenna characteristic and radio front-end technology. Raven first focussed on front-end technology and the methods of distributing off-air signals from large and expensive antenna arrays to a very large number of receivers.
This is a key feature of professional HF communication and surveillance receiver stations. We call these systems 'RF Matrix Systems'.
The main aspects of these systems are RF front-end processing, RF Switching and System Control.
RF front-ends need to include low noise amplification combined with high signal handling characteristics. To this end, you will find that Raven Research multicouplers and RF Signal Exchange Units are among the best in the world with respect to low Noise Figures and high Intermodulation Intercept Points.
Raven Research has also developed and maintained expertise in coinfiguration and control of these switching systems to enable them to inter-operate with computer based station control and IT systems. Meanwhile, we still preserve the ability to upgrade and maintain legacy systems as required.
All the well-known, standard protocols, inluding Ethernet, RS232, RS422m, and IEEE488 are available for interface to the customer's system.
System aspects, such as failure effect analysis, MTBF and Mean Average Repair Time (MART), installation, set-to-work, long term maintenance, handbooks and documentation are considered in depth when a system proposal is drafted and a formal set of procedures for the approval of system proposals is regularly checked by external auditors.
